⚡ TL;DR: Korea’s ski season usually runs from late November or early December to March. Short on time? Gonjiam and Jisan are about an hour from Seoul and perfect for a day trip. Want bigger mountains? Vivaldi Park and Elysian Gangchon are easy weekend picks, and Yongpyong and High1 are the big Gangwon resorts. Day-trip packages with a shuttle, rental gear and a lift ticket make it easy even if you’ve never skied.
Here’s something many visitors don’t realize: you can leave Seoul after breakfast, be on a ski slope before lunch, and be back in the city for dinner. Korea has a surprisingly big ski culture, from Olympic-level mountains in Gangwon to small resorts an hour from the subway.
I’ve skied most of these over the years, from school trips as a kid to night skiing after work. Here’s how to pick the right one for your trip.

Best ski resorts near Seoul
| Resort | Area | From Seoul | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gonjiam Resort | Gwangju, Gyeonggi | ~1 hr | Day trips, well-groomed slopes, easy subway + taxi access |
| Jisan Forest Resort | Icheon, Gyeonggi | ~1 hr | Day trips, night skiing, beginners |
| Elysian Gangchon | Chuncheon, Gangwon | ~1–1.5 hrs | Train access, families, a relaxed vibe |
| Vivaldi Park | Hongcheon, Gangwon | ~1.5–2 hrs | Snowboarders, big resort with lots to do |
| Yongpyong / Mona Yongpyong | Pyeongchang, Gangwon | ~2.5–3 hrs | Long runs, 2018 Olympic slopes, a real mountain feel |
| High1 Resort | Jeongseon, Gangwon | ~3 hrs | Intermediate and advanced skiers, long trails |
Travel times are rough, by car or shuttle in normal traffic. Weekend traffic out of Seoul can add an hour.
When does the ski season open?
Opening dates depend on snow and temperature, and most resorts announce them only a week or two ahead. In recent seasons, the first Gangwon resorts opened around the end of November, with resorts near Seoul following in early December. For 2026–27, season passes are already on sale, but many opening dates hadn’t been confirmed as of early November, so check the resort’s official site before you book.
How to get there without a car
- Ski shuttle buses run from Seoul stations like Jamsil to most big resorts in season; book a seat online in advance
- Subway + taxi to Gonjiam: Gyeonggang Line to Gonjiam Station, then about 10 minutes by taxi or local bus
- Train to Elysian Gangchon: Gyeongchun Line to Baegyang-ri Station, right next to the resort
- Day-trip packages: travel apps sell bundles with a round-trip shuttle from central Seoul, ski or snowboard rental, clothing rental and a lift ticket. It’s the easiest option for first-timers

What it costs
Lift tickets are sold by hours. As a reference, Gonjiam’s posted 2026–27 prices are about ₩81,000 (weekday) to ₩96,000 (weekend) for 4 hours. Card-company and online discounts are common, so few people pay the full posted rate. Budget extra for:
- Equipment rental: skis or snowboard, boots and poles
- Clothing rental: jackets and pants are easy to rent at or near the resort
- Lessons: group or private, some in English
- Lockers and food on the mountain
🔥 Hot take: For a first time, skip the big famous resort and do a weekday half-day at Gonjiam or Jisan. Shorter lines, less traffic, more time actually on the snow.
Tips for a great ski day
- Go on a weekday if you can; weekends are crowded and traffic is heavy
- Try night skiing: many resorts near Seoul stay open late, and it’s cheaper
- Bring your passport for rentals and some discounts
- Book lessons in advance if you want an English-speaking instructor
- Dress in layers; Gangwon mountain mornings can be well below freezing
💡 Friend tip from a doctor: Snow reflects a lot of UV, so you can burn on a cloudy ski day. Wear sunscreen, reapply at lunch, and use a lip balm with SPF. My Korean sunscreen picks and dry skin guide will save your face.

Make it a winter trip
- Warm up afterward at a jjimjilbang
- Add a snowy hike: Hallasan in winter or the Seoraksan area
- Eat your way through Korean winter street food back in Seoul
- More ideas in Korea in winter
🙅 Skip: driving out of Seoul on a Saturday morning, skiing without a helmet, and assuming the resort is open in late November without checking.
